Interview with the cast of The Wiz

Interview with the cast of The Wiz

ENC’s production of THE WIZ opens in just a few days during 2016 Homecoming weekend! We sat down with some of the cast and crew to talk about what they bring to this famous piece. Plus, the play is only $1 for ENC students at the 10/13 and 10/20 7:30pm shows.

Director — Tara Watkins

Q: Why was The Wiz chosen for the fall musical? A: I chose THE WIZ because it is a show that features a diverse cast with a message about creating bridges between our differences. Besides it being a show good for the whole family, it is a show I thought was needed right now during this time in our world.

Q: What special elements does ENC bring to this famous musical?A: We have cast the show with both black and white actors in hopes of it being about inclusion, rather than separation. Our production features technological projections and a funky children’s building blocks set. The world is what you create it to be!

Q: What are you most excited about for this play? A: I’m just excited for an audience to see it! It’s going to be fun and full of great energy!

Dorothy — Raijene Murchison

Q: What about the character made you want to play Dorothy? A: I was incredibly nervous to audition for the part of Dorothy. I’m new to theater and I just wasn’t sure that I was going to be the right fit. The Wiz is a big deal, and I honestly feared that I just wasn’t going to be enough for the part. So I really took a step out on faith. I like to sing- this is a musical. I love an adventure- she travels to Oz. LETS DO THIS! When I found out that I was Dorothy, I was overwhelmed with emotion that to this moment I can’t fully explain. The more I read her lines and got to know her character I realized that I and her are not much different at all. Just two girls walking through life trying to figure out where we fit, and where we are going but enjoying the journey while we do it. Dorothy is just a little cooler than me though.

Q: What about THE WIZ makes you excited to be part of the cast? A: Seeing the characters evolve has to be the best part. The Journey through Oz and seeing each one become a little smarter, a little braver, a little more sure of themselves. These characters are developing into the best versions of themselves and you can see it in the way they move and the way they sing. We have such a strong cast that brings these characters to life, from the leads to the dancers and singers. Everyone is working cohesively to bring this land to life and to tell this story. Its humbling to be working with such a talented group.

Q: What is your favorite scene? A: My favorite scene, though it breaks my heart at the same time, has got to be the end. SPOILER ALERT: It is time for Dorothy to leave the Wonderful Land Of Oz where she has made loyal friends, slain witches, and danced with munchkins. Its a perfect picture to me because, just like real life, all good things must come to an end. Our lives are constantly moving and we are consistently meeting people, having experiences, learning from those experiences and allowing all of that to shape who we are. Its a powerful message of life, love, and home and I cannot wait for others to come and journey with Dorothy and her friends and experience all of the feels and all of the hard work that the cast has been putting in for the past month and a half.

Q: What is the best part of being the Tin man? A: The best part of being the tin man is the interaction with the other characters. By the end of the show, tin man, lion, and scarecrow are almost this band of brothers. They become the best of friends and it is a lot of fun building that friendship throughout the show.

Q: How will ENC’s version of THE WIZ differ from what other schools might produce? A: I think what makes the ENC production of THE WIZ unique is our perspective on the music. THE WIZ score is very gospel oriented and it has been great seeing how we as Christians can worship through theater.

Q: What is your favorite scene? A: I don’t think I could possibly narrow down the show to one favorite scene but I really enjoy the scenes with the Wizard.  The flashiness of his character and the grandness of the emerald city is a lot of fun to act with.

Q: What is your favorite part of getting to play Addaperle? A: I get to play a funny character! I’ve never considered myself to be a funny person.

Q: What do you hope the audience takes away from the performance? A: Lots and lots of laughs

Q: What is your favorite scene? A: I’m not sure yet. I haven’t seen the whole thing put together, but I am excited about the scenes where the entire cast gets to sing together.
