Free or under $20 Summer Activities in Boston

While most of our students are gone, those that are working on campus over the summer reside on campus. Those that do get to enjoy the beautiful summer weather and all that Boston has to do from May through August.

Free Fun Fridays – Every Friday in the Summer

Every Friday in the summer, the Highland Street Foundation provides free admission to 8 museums, parks, programs, and treasured cultural centers. Each Friday features 8 different spots so you can see something unique each week.

Shakespeare on the Common – July-August on the Boston Common

Every year the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company creates a stage on the Boston Common and puts on free showings a few nights a week. Bring a picnic and blanket, and enjoy a night of theater in the great outdoors.

Scooperbowl – June 6-8th at City Hall

Hosted by the Jimmy Fun, this all-you-can-eat ice cream bonanaza is just $10 when you purchase your ticket ahead of time.

Coolidge Corner Arts Festival – June 3 in Coolidge Corner

With over 75 artists and food trucks, all serenaded by live music, there is plenty to do on this day-long festival. Going all along Babcock Street in Brookline’s Coodlidge Corner, this festival is a great way to explore some of Bostons urban suburbs and see the local artisan offerings.

Boston Jerk Fest – June 23-24th in the South End

For just $20, you can tour the family-friendly Caribbean style festival featuring Jamaican jerk spiced food for purchase separately.

Boston Harbor Fest – June 30-July 2 at various locations

This weekend-long festival of food, live music, fireworks, and an arts festival, has something for everyone. At the festival food items are available for purchase but most of the general activities are free to visitors.

Free Flick Fridays – Fridays at the Hatchshell on the Esplanade

Bring lawn chairs or a blanket and enjoy a sunset movie experience by the Charles River. Each week there is a different movie show starting at sundown with games and giveaways happening prior.

Summer in the City Concerts by Berklee – Various Locations and Times

Berklee College of music hosts 200+ free concerts throughout Boston during the summer.

FREE Summer Yoga – Boston Common, various times

Strengthen your core and balance with free yoga classes on the Boston Common held by the Frog Pond. Learn from top teachers in the area and try something new!

Dragon Boat Festival – June 10-11, On the river just pas Harvard Square

Watch teams of rowers guide their dragon-shaped watercraft down the Charles River as the smells and sounds of China waft over the water. Watch performances of dancers and acrobats and try authentic Chinese cuisine. Admission is free and food is available for purchase.

SoWa Open Markets – Saturday’s & Sundays from 10am-4pm April-October in South Boston

Visit the region’s largest collection of local artisans, farmers, food trucks, and specialty vendors.

Boston Green Festival – August 11-13th at City Hall Plaza

This grassroots effort is organized by the Foundation for a Green Future with the goal of educating and empowering people to create a more sustainable, healthier world. Try samples of food, listen to live music, and meet vendors and companies who are working to create a healthier earth.
