10 Times You Should Ask for Help
Life is crazy. It’s chaotic and fast-paced and sometimes it feels like there are way more downs than ups. Hard things happen and it’s important for your personal health that you know when to ask for help. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength! If you’re struggling with something on the list below, or anything else please reach out to a friend and let them know that you need their support.
1. When you feel depressed. The majority of college students will feel depressed at least once during their time in school. Tell a friend, your RA, or your RD that you are having a hard time. They can help keep you motivated and on the right track.
2. When your friend is depressed or mentions self-harm. It’s one thing to flippantly say “I’m so ___ I could die.” It’s a whole other thing too seriously mention that someone is considering harming themselves. If you hear a friend or fellow student mention self-harm, immediately tell an RD or a trusted adult. This is not something to be taken flippantly.
3. When school work piles up. With anywhere between 4 and 7 classes, it’s common for students to get overwhelmed with their growing homework pile. Talk to CAS about getting help with the homework you don’t understand if you’re really having an issue, talk to your adviser.
4. When searching for a job. You most likely have relatives and friends who are involved in the hiring process or know someone who is. Let people know that you’re looking for a job and you’ll be surprised how many people ask you to pass along your resume.
5. When having roommate issues. Your dorm room should be your safe place. If you are having roommate issues, tell your RA or reach out to your RD and let them know. They can help facilitate conversations between you and your roommate and figure out the best option to keep both of you happy and healthy.
6. When you’re sick. Many minor health issues can become much larger if left untreated. If there’s something not right, go see a doctor and treat the issue while it’s still small.
7. When you don’t understand. There’s no shame in saying you don’t understand. If you’re in class, talk to the professor after the lecture and let them know you’re not getting the concept. If you’re at work, talk to your manager about the project at hand. It’s better to ask questions than to do something wrong and have to backtrack.
8. When you feel unsafe. If you ever feel unsafe for any reason, tell someone. If you feel unsafe in a relationship, or friendship, at work, at a restaurant, or in class, you owe it to yourself to tell someone. Don’t wait until something happens, tell someone immediately so they can help you figure out what to do.
9. When you start a new relationship. The beginning stages of every new relationship are tricky. Find a friend you trust who can be your sounding board when you want to rant or rave. find an older couple you respect and use them as a mentor for your relationship.
10. When you’re lost. Whether personally, professionally, or physically you should ask for help when you’re lost. If you’re physically lost, find a gas station and ask for directions. If you’re personally lost, talk to a trusted friend, family member, or counselor. If you’re professionally lost, talk to a professional mentor and find what you’re passionate about. You were created with purpose and you don’t have to be stuck feeling out of place.
